Across the world, every day life experiences show the dire need for the right kind of leaders—problem solvers, visionaries, and holistic thinkers, who are focused on overarching goals, strategic visions, and the overall good of their societies, commnunities or groups rather than on self-promotion. Leaders who know how to make the right kind of decisions that would be impactful on a large scale for sustainable desired good of those they lead, yet who know that they could not be right all the time and would be willing to admit that without shying away from holding themselves accountable.

Nowadays, the optics, the images, what is personally self-actuating is what gains attention for people aspiring to be leaders—or, in many cases, those who are promoting themselves as leaders. This situation calls for a drive for the right kind of leadership development across the globe. Call it a leadership scourge requiring the right kind of leadership development initiative.

You would be doing it for yourself but it may pay dividends in other aspects of your life where duty calls or when opportunitites present themselves—which may snowball in bringing good for the larger social environment. A situation which would be more fulfilling than self-centred attention seeking.

Improve yourself for effectiveness in decision-making, problem solving and getting things done with and through people.

There will also be the self-leadership initiative that makes you prepared for relevance—increasingly being more valuable—in your career through getting yourself better skilled and regularly abreast of your discipline or subject, and professional or business niches. Being the best you could be and scripting your relationships and oportunities to make the most of your talents, assets, and resources would be part of the self-leardership initiative.

When the general crowd is getting overwhelmed or many people around you are getting edgy, it is time to look at such a situation with a different prism or a fresh pair of eyes.

What in real terms are the operating factors—and the root causes—and the controlling dynamics in the situation? This comes with practice, particularly from learning to stay focused, accentuating the positive aspects of things—rather than the gloom and doom—and promoting the bigger picture rather than the spur of the momment. Of course, it would be important to deal with urgent challenges of the occasion or situation to avoid escalating them,—knowing that in crises problem tend to pile up and become more troubling and complex if not well handled and at the right time, some being more urgent than others. This would be part of the art of problem solving. In such a contex, and with that understanding, planning for milestonnes to attain over a period of timeline should be factored into the equation.

Chart Your Course to Sustained Progress

Have a self-leadership development plan of action with clear, specific short-term goals and milestones in key areas of your life, where you would take charge of things—with specific time lines. This would give you focus and direction. It would also be the basis for creating your self-leadership development road map. Then regularly monitor your progress in self-leadership for personal success, sound mental health, optimized financial and social well-being to see how well you are doing. This would lead to developing more ambitious milestones and position you to better able achieve greater things in life and move you further towards self-actualization.
